Leopardi and cosmic pessimism

Transcript
Giacomo Leopardi is one of the greatest poets in Italian literature, but also a radical philosopher.
His worldview, which critics call "cosmic pessimism", springs from a razor-sharp observation of reality.

For Leopardi, nature is neither benevolent nor cruel: it is simply indifferent.
The human being is therefore trapped in a tragic condition: conscious enough to suffer, but not enough to understand why.
And yet Leopardi does not give in to despair.
In poetry itself, in the very act of naming pain, he finds a form of resistance.
His work, in particular the Canti, remains extraordinarily relevant.
In an age saturated with stimulation and ready-made answers, Leopardi insists on asking uncomfortable questions.
This, perhaps, is his most enduring gift.
