Her revolution was simple but radical: to place the child at the centre.
In nineteenth-century traditional education the child was a vessel to be filled.
Montessori understood that children learn better through direct experience.
In 1907 she opened the first Casa dei Bambini in Rome's San Lorenzo neighbourhood.
Children could freely choose their activities and materials.
The teacher was no longer an absolute authority, but a discreet guide.
The method spread rapidly across Europe and the United States.
Today there are more than twenty-two thousand Montessori schools in over a hundred countries.
Yet in Italy the public schools that adopt the method are still few.
There are those who argue that the Italian school system is too rigid to embrace it.
Others believe instead that Italy itself should rediscover this heritage.
The debate is still open and more relevant than ever.
Perhaps Montessori's true legacy is precisely this question: who does education serve?
