We say meeting instead of riunione, deadline instead of scadenza.
The phenomenon is not new: Italian has always borrowed from French and Spanish.
But the speed with which anglicisms enter today is without precedent.
Social media and the digital work world are the main channels.
There are those who consider this tendency a threat to cultural identity.
The government even proposed a law to limit the use of anglicisms in public administration.
Linguists, however, are divided on the effectiveness of such measures.
No law has ever stopped the natural evolution of a language.
Others point out that some English words fill gaps that Italian does not fill.
The real risk is not the anglicism itself, but losing the expressive richness of Italian.
This language has a precision and a musicality unique in the world.
It would be a shame to let that richness be impoverished just for the sake of chasing a trend.
The right answer is neither purism nor surrender, but awareness.
Using an English word when it serves a purpose is fine; doing so out of laziness is another matter.
