He knew all the arias by heart.
His favorite was La Traviata by Verdi.
He used to tell me Violetta's story before going into the theatre.
He said opera is like a sung novel.
The theatre was always full and smelled of velvet and old perfumes.
When the lights went down, my heart beat hard.
The first note of the orchestra seemed like a breath.
Over the years I've never lost that feeling.
Today I go back with my daughter and explain the plot before the start.
I feel like my grandfather from many years ago.
Opera passes from one generation to the next like a family secret.
