Their goal was to free the South of Italy from the Bourbons.
They landed in Marsala on the eleventh of May.
The Sicilian population welcomed them enthusiastically.
Garibaldi was neither a king nor a traditional politician.
He was a soldier who believed in the freedom of peoples.
As he advanced toward Palermo, many peasants joined the army.
In a few months he conquered all of Sicily.
Then he crossed the Strait of Messina and went up toward Naples.
At Teano he met King Vittorio Emanuele and handed him the kingdom.
That gesture remains one of the most symbolic moments of the Risorgimento.
Without Garibaldi the unification of Italy would have come much later.
