The industrialised North was growing, while the South remained predominantly agricultural.
The Cassa del Mezzogiorno, established in 1950, tried to bridge the gap with massive public investments.
The results were partial and controversial.
Today the GDP per capita of the South is still about fifty-five percent of that of the North.
The challenge remains open: to build an Italy that is not divided into two speeds.
