Their names are Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore.
Now, these villages are built directly on the cliffs above the sea.
The houses are painted yellow, orange, pink, and green.
For centuries fishermen painted their houses in bright colours to recognise them from the sea.
So, today the area is a National Park and a UNESCO site.
Millions of tourists arrive every year, especially in summer.
Listen: the best way to visit the Cinque Terre is on foot.
A famous trail connects all five villages along the cliff.
You walk among vineyards and see the sea in every direction.
After the walk, it is a must to taste the anchovies from Monterosso.
But there is also a problem: excessive tourism risks damaging the landscape.
For this reason the local authorities have introduced a ticket for the trails.
The Cinque Terre remain a magical place, but they must be protected.
