The Alps and the Apennines form a kind of natural basin.
When the wind is absent for days, the air becomes unbreathable.
Experts warn that prolonged exposure reduces life expectancy by several months.
The causes are manifold: oil heating, heavy traffic, and intensive agriculture.
Local administrations sometimes impose traffic bans on the worst days.
However, these measures appear insufficient unless accompanied by structural action.
A more ambitious public transport policy would be needed.
Investments would be needed in thermal insulation of buildings.
Above all, a different awareness on the part of citizens would be needed.
The air we breathe is a common good for which we are all responsible.
